Can you believe it's March 23 already? This week:

+ According to a poll conducted by the British department store Debenham's, the number one fashion invention is the Wonderbra. While I don't think that specifically the Wonderbra is the number fashion invention, I do think that bras in general are pretty helpful. What do you think?

+ Apparently clothing company Edoc is producing a line of t-shirts based on a mystery story. Pricey but still a cool idea.

+ Ali Michael, how old are you? I'm pretty sure she's shy of being eighteen, but wowee zowee, check out this month's Italian Vogue editorial. She really is gorgeous.

+ "It's not what you know, it's WHO you know." Unfortunately, it's pretty true stuff, especially in the fashion industry.

I love perusing the nooks and crannies of Flickr.com- it's as if there are secrets waiting to be uncovered. If you've gotten a hold of this month's issue of Nylon, you may have read a blurb featuring the designer Mirit Weinstock.

For her Spring/ Summer 08 collection, she asked five random photographers via Flickr to take photos of her garmets. No rules, no boundaries, no requirements. I think that creativity unleashed turns out to be a pretty wonderful animal... (My personal favorite are Lee's photos.)

Darlin' Won't You Let Me Cut Your Hair?

For the brave and the bored, here is my hair time line.

2003

I've pretty much had long hair for most of my life. This photo was taken on July 11th.

Apparently, a couple days later I a) chopped it off , b) added a reddish tint to it, and c) refused to take a good picture.
2004

I pretty much held onto my haircut until October of '04. That's when I decided to get my bob on. Pictured below is me being a silly little fifteen year old.
Around Christmas time the bangs grew out, so I kept them side swept.

2005

No big changes until June '05. I jumped back to square one and chopped a lot of my hair off.
A couple months later (August?), I defined my hair a little, going a little shorter in the back and longer in the front.

Later that month, I was bored with the lack of color so I got light brown hi-lights... I was really happy with this hair cut.
2006

By the same month next year, my hair was close to getting back to its original black state. I didn't let that happen and decided to get blonde highlights and bleach the bottom half. Here's little wannabe me with a sad ponytail (back & front views).
This is what it looked like down (also back & front views).
Homecoming in October.

2007

Come January, my hair grew out a little and unfortunately started puffing out only at mid-length (that was a bad explanation, but I think you can see for youself).
Don't remember what I did, but by April it wasn't that bad.
Later in April, Senior Prom came around. I cried this day because I asked my hairdresser for a head of curls and obviously didn't get that... I ended up being at peace with what I had, though. It also didn't hurt that yours truly was prom queen.
When I went to college in the fall, my awesome hall mates bought me this wig that I was obsessed with.
I braved a lot of ugly stages and finally let my hair grow back again (all the highlights by now are mostly gone). This was in November.

2008

I chopped it all off last week.
Initially, I looked like I was a 12 year old boy. However, I've been getting comments like: "You look like Peter Pan!" (that's a good thing to me) and "You look older!" (which is super super nice to hear after everyone's said that I look like I'm 14).

Fin. For now. :)

I've been MIA from Wardrobe Remix lately, so I decided to play a little catch up. Can I just say: Hot damn! -these people really know how to be effortlessly cool.

I'm digging the slouch factor in 2-5-0-3-0-1-now-in-1 0437's ensemble. Equalling loving her Threadless tee. C'mon, how cool is she?

The Clothes Horse is a given. I was particularly taken by the bold colors- check out that sweet sweet floral print. Sometimes floral prints really remind me of ugly couch covers, but not in this case.

Wow, never have I encountered such a classy stunner. I like the clean, white stockings against the shiny shoes.

For some reason, today I'm associating effortlessly cool with trousers and scarfs.

I am a sucker for all the above: a crisp white blouse, the peter pan collar, the paper bag skirt, cute as a button hair, and of course, the shoes-- which are, by the way, not the same!

I really want to try CB's I Hate Perfume. The quirky scents, which range from "In the Library" (I'm quite curious about this particular one) to "Memory of Kindness" apparently smell exactly like their name. Christoper Brosius' perfumes are alcohol and gender free. He writes, "While certain of my scents are more popular with one or the other, I do not define scent by gender. I prefer to let people choose for themselves." Also, he encourages layering the scents-- I wonder what "In the Summer Kitchen" and "Winter 1972" would smell like together...

+ LC of Fops & Dandies never fails to provoke thought. Last week she posted about Jesusbranded, an online retailer dedicated to selling Christian-inspired shirts in a sort of trendy, teen way. I'm sort of turned off by this idea. I understand that it could be seen as a proclamation of faith. On the other hand, it seems to trivialize religion. I don't know. What do you think?

Sing Eclectic's Top Five

I have to agree with my girl here-- Jennifer Garner was just classy and well put together. Not to mention, she has a pretty rockin' bod for being a mama.

I know I've heard that some are disappointed with Heidi Klum's choice (too safe?), but she undeniably chose an excellent shade of red. The little collar/shawl kept it fresh for me.

Not only did Marion Cotillard win Best Actress, she also served up one of the best red carpet looks (my favorite!). I love the scale-like details. She somehow made it seem more like mermaid than fishy.

Ok, ok, so this photo is from the Oscar's viewing party, but give me a break. ...I distinctly recall Zhang Ziyi in a beautiful green number a few years back, and she doesn't cease to impress me with her fashion choices. Brilliant color choice and lovely flouncy details.

What I love about Cameron Diaz's dress are the folds and pleats. I feel like she could have been a little more adventurous with color. Then again, just like Abby, I feel like most of the Oscar outfits were too safe (see the similar- if not identical silhouettes). We need another Bjork-swan-esque outfit!

P.S. For all you James McAvoy fans... I know there are a handful of you!

Knit Wit

I've never really been a big fan of Missoni's woven knit stuff. The colors are fun, but their signature zig-zag pattern is just not for me. I was, however, happy with a select number of their looks from their 2008 RTW (with the exceptions of fur garmets).

I was visually thrilled by the monumental, breast-plate necklace donned by Lily Donaldson. Also, notice the non-repulsive poncho.

I found the necklace reminiscent of Mary Katrantzou's (of Central Saint Martins graduating class) designs featured earlier this week.

Back to Missoni. Below, I found the scarf very dramatic (good dramatic!)-- they definitely styled it right. The looks was overall conservative, but the print is playful and the peeking-out shoulder is only a little bit flirty.

Beautiful details by the neck and torso. My only complaint is the bottom of the dress. Sort of reminds me of a big black garbage bag.

Sing Eclectic was forged not only for the purpose of sharing my latest fascinations and discoveries, but also to celebrate diversity. In honor of Black History Month, I want to briefly feature of one of the first notable African-American models, Donyale Luna.

Donyale, who was born Peggy Anne Freeman in Detriot, Michigan, began her career as a model when she was spotted on the street by photographer David McCabe. Soon enough, she was a part of Andy Warhol's crew and appeared in a handful of movies produced by him. In 1966, she became the first African American to grace the cover of British Vogue. She also landed the following publications: Harper's Bazaar, Paris Match, Britain's Queen, the British, French or American editions of Vogue. Luna

Her figure, which one could describe as "unearthly"- she was 6'2"!- paralleled her personality. In a 1968 New York Times article, a relative said that she was "a very weird child, even from birth, living in a wonderland, a dream." Unfortunately, Luna's dream-like nature cost her modeling career as she, according to Beverly Johnson (another rising model of Luna's time), "went up and down the runways on her hands and knees. She didn't show up for bookings. She didn't have a hard time, she made it hard for herself."

Luna's mysterious and ambiguous nature also reflected on her racial identities. In the Times article, she said, "If it [a movie appearance] brings about more jobs for Mexicans, Chinese, Indians, Negroes, groovy. It could be good, it could be bad. I couldn't care less." Despite her nonchalant comment and her uneasy attitude toward her race at times, Luna's presence in the fashion world undoubtedly contributed to the opening of doors for many talented African Americans.

History Lesson: Casual Friday

I am currently reading The End of Fashion by Teri Agins, a book recommended to me by one of my professors. I haven't gotten past page 12 yet because reading books for leisure in between perpetual textbook duty is near impossible... It's been compelling so far, though.

The book is- as you can easily deduce- about how fashion evolved. I'm not going to delve into that, though- instead, in honor of everyone's favorite day of the week, here's a history lesson on "Casual Friday":

In the early 90s, Alcoa, a Pittsburgh based aluminum company, "became the first major corporation to sanction office attire." But how did this change come about?

During a two-week fund drive, the company allowed contributors to dress informally. Employees liked dressing casually so much that the company changed the policy so that people could wear non-fussy clothes everyday.

Soon after, the rest of corporate America (ie. IBM and a slew of other corporations) followed along. Though some companies didn't completely abolish their cleaned-up dress coat, they at least allowed for one day of the week- Casual Friday- in which workers could dress however they pleased.

In a way, I guess you can blame sloppy dressing on Casual Friday. After all, it was a trend that swept the nation, helped shut down boutiques, and encouraged the masses to dress down.

MJ is up there in my list of favorite designers... here's what I thought of his Marc by Marc line. (My apologies if you're tired of the Fashion Week Frenzy.)

The boots and the skirt have just the right balance of sweet and tough (I confess: I could do without the bag- not a fan of the print). What I like best is the vest- the exaggerated pockets remind me of fanny packs. At the beginning of the year, I postulated that fanny packs aren't making a big comeback anytime soon but maybe they will- as long as they're in this form.

I just had an after thought. A bad one. ...If you aren't as svelte as this woman, then the fanny-pack vest may just look like supplementary saddle bags. At least I can still admire them on her!

Here again, we have the fanny pack-esque pocket, but what I love here are the keenly placed belted bands.

I find this print pretty appalling, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the fun shape of the dress. Plus, the gigantic pocket is actually neat.

I've already drooled all over the shoes in this collection- the buckles make me believe that if I ever got to stomp around in them, I'd feel pretty BA all day. I dig this dress because it has that BA vibe with multiple trims and findings.

This dress is pretty, but the reason I posted it was so that you can see the sleeves in context. Look for the back view of the dress.

I wish that I could wear shapes like these without looking like the clothes are wearing me.

The Great Fake-Out

I'm content with my Nalgene and Sigg water bottles, but I just wanted to share these wittily designed drinking devices:

Yeah, remember those "I am not a plastic bag" totes (that got a little old, I think)? This porcelain cup is a similar but funny take on the disposable coffee cup.

These bottles eerily resemble Aquafina or Arrowhead bottles, but they're actually made out of glass. Neat and a (glass) half (full).

The other day I was sporting a pair of bright blue tights. Thrilled that the weather allowed for some creative dressing, I was planning on posting a photo on Wardrobe Remix. Unfortunately, before that happened, my tights snagged, unraveled, and all I had to show for was one screaming, growing hole that ruined the ensemble.

Though Alexander Wang seemed to have a penchant for snagged tights in his show (tsk tsk, Mr. Wang), I can't help but think how unattractive that is.

I do hope that nobody is paying an ungodly amount of cash for ungodly tights. You can go to Target and DIY- just like me.

3. I like fashion the way I like people: a sense of humor is important. I love that at first glance you can notice the charming mermaid tail, but if you look closer, the mermaid has this little chubby belly. Endearing.

I first heard of Bat For Lashes (AKA Natasha Kahn) through Teen Vogues' October 2007 issue. Instantly intrigued by a photo of her sporting a sparkly head band, I hopped on to YouTube to watch her video for "What's a Girl to Do?" Honestly, the music was just so-so but I saw the sense of humor and quirk-quality in her (IE. BMXers with animal masks doing dance moves).

Putting the Rad in Colorado: Objects of Affection

I love Colorado, my adopted home, and I feel like a lot of neat people, places, and things go undiscovered. I'm hoping to start posting more "Putting the Rad in Colorado" features.

Today, let me introduce you to Objects of Affection, a charming shop in Kit Carlson run by Lani Robertson (I actually randomly stumbled upon her Flickr page and was happy to find out she's a local!).

The mother of two, who sells the most adorable charms/ jewelry/ lights fashioned from vintage finds, put up shop in an abandoned space in her town just two years ago. One of the best parts about Objects of Affection is that all the cute stuff accompanies an accute price tag ($8-$25 is the price range).

I'm hoping that I can venture up and check the store out in person, but due to my lack of transportation, here's the etsy shop that I certainly like to browse.

Today in my design appreciation class, my professor showed us a video clip of Hussein Chalayan's 2000 Fall collection to help illustrate the fact that a viewer's past experience contributes to aesthetic response.

The collection blurred the line between interior design and apparel design in that while models sauntered the runway, they would lift up seat covers and wear them. The little tables even transformed into suitcases. The collection apparently alluded to fleeing (of people from the Bosnian ethnic conflict in the 90s) which explains the minimalism of the clothes. Interesting juxtaposition with the morphing furniture.

The finale- which of course, I found mesmerizing- was that of a round coffee table that metamorphosed into a skirt. A wooden skirt!

While I unfortunately sought out the same video, my efforts were fruitless. Instead, here's a photo:

Anyway, I was so impressed by Mr. Chalayan's designs, that as I was learning more about him, I made the connection that he was the one who did this iconic robotic dress from Spring 2007:

Convertible mittens and scarfs are quite nice to help stay toasty. Your face, however, is another story. It's hard to keep warm without looking like you're about rob a bank.

For a price (pretty hefty) Seattle's Ruffeo Hearts Lil' Snotty can help you out.

The Classic Doubel Barrel has a hood that converts to a scarfy, collar-like device. Perfect for biking to class on a blustery day.

The Wooley Bomber is super appealing to me: hot color blocking, detachable bandana, and pockets that zip up ("to keep your hands warm and your goodies safe")! I also dig the fact that the bomber is 98% from salvaged materials. Neat and half.

I feel a little skeptical about the NEKKIN BRACE. I'm wondering how many people can pull of this without looking like they're hiding in a hole. Still, the zippers and colors are fun. What do you think?

Winter Woes

Last night, my boyfriend and I were out and about. In my standard snow get-up, I complained, "I hate winter because I don't feel cute!" He replied, "Well, I think you look cute but maybe you could buy a nice pea coat or something."

(I don't think he necessarily meany pea coat, I think he just meant a more tailored coat.)

After his sage comment, I realized that I do keep my Columbia jacket in heavy rotation. As sturdy, warm, and reliable my beloved jacket is, I decided to scope out some possible alternatives.

Top Five: Waking Up Late

Without my mom to constantly poke her head into my room and tell me to get up for school, waking up ten minutes before class (they were 8AMs!) has become an all-too familiar occurrence.

While I'm still not back from my restful six-week break (I start next Tuesday, suckers!), I know that sleeping in until ten daily will hit me really hard. For this reason, I have been thinking about quick ways I can make it seem like "I didn't just wake up ten minutes ago."

5. Hop out of the PJs. I've gone to class in my pajamas before, but I'm just the kind of person that isn't fond of wearing sweats outside of my house. Of course, if desperate times call for desperate measures, I will wear jammies.
4. Get Rid of that Bed Head. Just like most, I have ungodly hair in the AM. Some possible solutions: the easy ponytail, scarf/ turban, or some sort of hat. Watch this video of Gala Darling if you're interested in learning how to tie a turban.

3. Wear a Piece of Jewelry. I think a pretty cocktail ring or string of pearls have the power to make you feel pretty no matter what. I think that I'll set aside some baubles in a dish by my sink- it's on the way out, so I can just grab something and put it on as I walk out the door.
2. Put on lipstick and/or perfume. The thing I like about either one of these is that you don't have to concentrate too hard. Also, maybe I can stash roll on perfume in my bag- it's perfect because it's 100% on-the-go-able and it won't spill everywhere (hopefully).

When Fanny Packs Attack!

The other day, I was with my mom and grandmother at Macy's while they were exchanging a bag. While I was waiting for them, I wandered around and discovered an array of LeSportsac and Harajuku Lovers fanny packs.

While they looked fun and colorful, but I think the whole "tourist" stereotype will never be divorced from them. Plus, a lot of people would be hung up on the fact that they just attract more attention toward their waists.

This is my bag- my brother got it for me for Christmas (the sparkle factor is a bit obnoxious, but I like it anyway). While I don't really lug odds and ends with me, I do have the essentials. I also like a lot of room in my bag because when I buy things, I don't need a plastic/ paper bag.

+One. Since I went to the dentist (no cavities!) and happen to like free stuff, I took them up on free floss and a toothbrush.
+Two. Red red lipstick and chapstick. Of the cheap variety since I tend to lose stuff like that.
+Three. Red iPod. I don't have my headphones because I just plug it into my car.
+Four. Poketo wallet via boyfriend.
+Five. Cell phone.
+Six. I always seem to have a billion receipts in my bags because I always want to recycle them. They eventually do get recycled... after sitting around in my bag for awhile.

Pretty standard, really.

Yesterday, I was feeling inspired by the ever versatile Slow and Steady Wins the Race 10 shirt pack (see previous post). So I dug out a skirt that I rarely ever wear and wore in a new way.

The Moral at the End of the Fable

I was perusing oogaboogastore.com, and amid all the unattainable (for me, anyway) Opening Ceremony items, I saw this for $100:

Initially, I thought it was interesting, but I wasn't sure I'd pay $100 it. I clicked to find out more about it, and I discovered that this No. 6 Color Kit was actually a package of 10 shirts- of all different colors and all different shapes.

You can use as many or as little of the shirts together (the photo above is all the ten shirts together). Plus, you can layer them in various ways.

Pretty Daring (for American Apparel)

Known for being overtly sexual (even pornographic at times), American Apparel is testing out this long-sleeve maxi dress. People have been commenting that the test item could be improved by being shorter, see-through, or a v-neck.

While it's easy to laugh at the appalled commentaries, I'm pretty sure that only about 1.5% of people can pull this off. Certainly, a shorty like me can't pull this off.

I 'm still stunned. Atonement really does deserve its seven Golden Globe nominations. As if the movie wasn't crafted well enough, the costumes were just as brilliant. I was so inspired and impressed that I decided to hop on Polyvore right after seeing it and attempted (poorly!- in relation to the film) to recreate the magic.

Simple Arithmetic

While the "eco-trend" is ever persistent (a few days ago, I spotted "Recycle" t-shirts at Nordstrom), many share the cynical attitude of "what's the point of being 'green' when it's not really going to make a difference?"

We Add Up is a reminder that if one person acts eco-conscious in just one way (ie. changing bulbs, biking, flying less, etc.), it adds up.

When you buy a shirt, you get your own number that "represents your position in the global count." Exponentially cooler than these shirts, for sure.

P.S. They totally have other neat items like the Neither (paper or plastic- that is) grocery bag, travel mugs, and kids' shirts.

I think I'm pretty out of the loop, so this admiration is late- but I'm in love the striped Kanye Glasses.

Sure, you might not be able to see out of them- but look at how cool they are! Girlprops.com had them for sale for a bit, but since I'm a straggler, they've discontinued them. Luckily, I stumbled upon this site. They have just about every color and are putting out special edition ones (ie. gold, silver, glow-in-the-dark, and clear) early this year.

While I don't think I will spend my meager money supply on a colored pair (I know they're only $25, but please- I'm a college student), I would probably cop a clear pair. You can actually see out of them.

New Year, New Sing Eclectic, New Room

So I decided that I want to revamp Sing Eclectic. While it's fun to scout for well-dressed Coloradans, I want to blog about other stuff too.

So, in honor of the New Year, I decided satisfy my itch to clean! Here's my room before:

The mess is pretty self-explanatory. I usually can't stand living like this, but laziness cuts me. I spent New Year's Eve cleaning and rearranging (it wasn't too terribly depressing- it was actually a good start, don't you think?). Here's what it looks like now:

Awhile ago I read this in galadarling.com (yeah, I pretty much visit daily), and I thought it was quite clever/ resourceful to put some beautiful fashion spreads on display.

Ok, so the drawers look cluttered. But they aren't.

Today, it was a high of 23 degrees Farenheight and the campus was swarming with people all bundled up. I don't blame them- I was freeeezing, too. Miss Michelle, however, whom I know through my Fashion Industries class, was wearing this lovely ensemble. I loved her lace theme- the tights and the cardigan. "I got the lace tights from Urban Outfitters," she told me, "I actually got them on sale- 2/$5!" A good enough steal to say that she's the thief of my heart.

Sorry for the sparse updates. School, family time, and life in general has been time consuming. Also, the cold weather has not been conducive to looking very chic.

I went home for Thanksgiving break and on one day (they all blur together), my mom and I went to the ARC. I wasn't expecting to find anyone who I'd like to take a picture of, but luckily I brought my camera because Jamie was there. My favorite part is her flats.

Erica

Erica was kind enough to let me take her picture in the middle of her lunch. What caught my eye was her little overcoat. Since I didn't want to take up her time, I opted against documenting more details. I especially wish that I had snapped her earrings- they looked like dream catchers.

Meet Robert. What's that he's holding?

Hmm...

It's a coin purse! ...How cool is that? He told me that he likes it because his change doesn't make a whole bunch of noise every time he takes a step. I was hoping I could get my hands on one of those, because 1) I always have loose change jangling around my bags and 2) it's very dapper. It's really too bad for me because Robert said that the coin purse was once his grandfather's.

I didn't really get to talk with Elena for long because she had to get to her horticulture class. My favorite part of her outfit was how she paired that green tweed coat (impressive since I'm not a big fan of tweed usually) with the vintage dress. I asked her where she got it and she told me she borrowed it from her roommate- lucky gal.

Alexis

When I asked Alexis to describe her style to me, she told me that she loves color. No lie: I love everything from the cheery Anthropologie coat to her cobalt shirt and paisley LeSportSac backpack.

Colorado isn't the first place you think of when you hear "fashion capital."

I've been living in this beautiful, landlocked state for about nine years, and while most of its inhabitants (I am shamefacedly admitting that I do this too) sloppily don sweatshirts, flip-flops, and the cliche designer handbag, I believe style isn't quarantined in places like NYC or Paris.

This blog is an experiment. I want to prove to you- yes you!- that humble Colorado does have style. How, you ask? I will be featuring Coloradans in style a la Facehunter, Broad&Market, and The Beehive State. I'll also be conducting mini-challenges for myself (ie. only allowing myself to wear shoes with height for a week- God knows I need to wear heels more).
